Offense Abounds for Dutch Baseball Team in Doubleheader Split
The bats stayed hot for the Central College baseball team with 19 runs while taking one of two games from Cornell College Sunday afternoon.
The Dutch (3-1) let an early lead slip away for a 9-8 defeat in 12 innings to start the day, before earning the split against the Rams with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap. Central had 24 hits, including five doubles and a home run on the day. Third baseman Brayden Sawyer led the Dutch with five hits, while left fielder Dylan Williams had two doubles in game two and designated hitter Dom DeLaPaz had his first home run of the season in the opener. Central led 8-3 going into the ninth inning of the first game, before the Rams plated five runs with two outs. Jackson Torbit was the starting pitcher and finished with a no decision, after striking out four and limiting the Rams to one hit and one run. Max Steinlage took the mound in game two, striking out five in six innings to earn the win. Cornell’s offense had another five-run inning in the eighth of game two, but freshman Eli Rouse came on in the ninth and struck out two of three batters he faced.
Central plays eight games in Florida next week at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, starting with a 2:45 pm game against Bethany College (W. Va.) on Sunday in Auburndale.
Central Men’s Tennis Earns Shutout Victory Against Cornell
The Central College men’s tennis team took down Cornell College 7-0 and won all but one match.
In doubles, Alex Slaymaker and Travis Subbert won 6-0 at #2 doubles, and the freshmen duo of Jack Briggs and Benny Ramker won 6-2 at #3 doubles to clinch the point. The singles matches were a clean sweep for the Dutch, with Ayden Fletcher earning a 6-1, 6-1 win at #1 singles. AJ Wilkins picked up a tough three set win at #2 singles, responding after losing the first set 6-4, by taking the second set 6-2 and winning the tiebreak 10-5. Briggs earned his second win of the day at #3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy was victorious at #4 singles 6-2, 6-3. Subbert and Slaymaker both took care of business with Subbert winning 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles and Slaymaker shut out his opponent at #6 singles 6-0, 6-0.
Central will return to the court in Orlando, Florida for spring break to play five matches. The first match is against Calvin College (Mich.) on March 11th at 10:30 am.
